Going Back to the 'Ham

Several years ago I was on a flight to Birmingham, when a somewhat inebriated man came on the plane and announced to all and sundry that he was "going back to the 'Ham". I never found out why he was so jubilant about heading to the "'Ham", which became especially difficult when he was removed from the plane for disruptive behaviour shortly afterwards. Nonetheless, this is not really his story, although I've never forgotten the phrase - and now I can use it myself.

We found out a couple of days ago that we will be going back to the 'Ham. We are all glad to have our final destination sorted, and so now begins paperwork and logistics, and other boring things. And to everyone in the 'Ham - see you soon!

The Plan

I thought I would do a general post to give all and sundry an update on what is going on with us and the general plan for the next month or so, although as the saying goes, "The best laid plans..."

As of today, we are five weeks away from my final day in the office - scheduled for 14 April. We still don't know our final destination, and yes, the suspense is killing us. Unfortunately, I still don't have a timeframe for resolution of the matter, but we're trying to move ahead as best we can. So, at the moment, our plans are...

Easter weekend, we plan to hire a car for the weekend, and visit a few last places before we go. I'm not exactly sure what all this will encompass, but Bath and the Cotswolds seem like definite possibilities, and maybe a side trip to Cardiff as well. We may hire a car before then for some other small town trips, and, in all likelihood, that will be the extent of our sightseeing/tourist activities until my last day.

Hopefully, all our stuff will be shipped home on either the 14th or the 15th. I also haven't heard from the shipping contact, so this is pure speculation on my part, but quite frankly, this is when I need it to happen, as our lease is set to expire on the 16th. Between now and then, there's the normal administrative stuff that has to get addressed - like cancelling our TV Licence, telephone, internet, etc., etc. I'm hopeful that we'll be able to maintain telephone and internet until our last day in the house, but we'll have to wait and see.

After that, we plan on heading to Ireland for about a week, starting on the 15th. One of my work colleagues has offered up a free place to stay on the southwest coast (about 12 miles from Mizen Head, for those of you who are interested), so we plan on staying there and basically running around southwest Ireland for the week, but trying to take it a bit easier than we have on any other holidays we've taken in the past two years.

Then, once we've done our bit there, we'll fly back on or around the 22nd. Depending on where we actually end up, this will be either a short visit in Birmingham before we go on to our final destination, or it will be time for us to begin settling in.

So there you have it - not a whole lot of information, but now you know everything we do.
